The F-2 is a fighter aircraft jointly developed by Japan and the United States, based on the F-16 aircraft adopted by the U.S. Air Force, and developed in line with Japan's unique operational concept and geographical characteristics. It began development in 1988, at which time it was known as the FS-X, and made its first flight in 1995. The main modifications from the F-16 were increased wing area to improve turning performance, and the use of advanced materials and structures for lighter weight and higher performance. In addition, advanced electronic devices such as radar and fire-control systems were adopted, along with improved engine thrust, takeoff maneuverability, and enhanced anti-ship attack power. Initially, it was classified as a support fighter whose main task was ground/anti-ship attacks, but it is known as a fighter due to the abolition of the "support fighter" classification.
