The Kawasaki Ki-61-ID Hien was the only Japanese fighter equipped with a liquid-cooled engine in the Pacific War. It carried the Ha40, a licensed production of the Daimler-Benz DB601 engine made in Germany. It had a streamlined nose and an elongated main wing; officially adopted as a Type 3 fighter in 1943, its armaments were strengthened several times to counter the highly bulletproof U.S. military aircraft. Among them was the I-type Hien, with a nose extended by 20cm, two 20mm cannons inside the fuselage and two 12.7mm cannons inside the main wing; about 1,360 of this version were produced from January 1944 to January 1945. Taking advantage of its excellent high-altitude performance and heavy armaments, it exerted its power in intercepting the B-29 in the battle for mainland Japan.
This special kit from Tamiya reproduces this iconic aircraft with elegantly silver-plated parts for a realistic texture and reduced gloss! The inverted V-type 12-cylinder Ha40 engine is reproduced with auxiliary equipment such as a supercharger; parts are also included for the 20mm cannon, magazine, and oil tank in front of the cockpit. The windshield can be opened and closed, and the upper engine cowl is removable too. In addition to two drop tanks, a seated pilot figure and decals for two types of markings and spot camouflage are also included. Order this amazing kit for your own collection today!
